The Darkness Is Just Getting Started
Dear Darklings,
There are characters you write nd then there are characters who refuse to leave. Lately, I've been spending more time in The Hollows than I probably should. The deeper I go into this story, the more I realize it isn't just about obsession, power, or survival.
It's about the ghosts we carry. The choices we make when love and loyalty collide.
And the people who become monsters because they believe they have no other choice.
CHARACTER SPOTLIGHT — MANLY WHITAKE
Age: 56
Legacy: Heir to Whitaker Timber (40% of The Hollows’ power structure)
Reputation: Ruthless. Untouchable. Unbreakable.
Until now.
Manly Whitaker is the kind of man systems are built around—quiet power, calculated violence, and absolute control. For decades, he upheld The Hollows’ doctrine without hesitation, playing his role in an empire rooted in exploitation and silence.
But beneath the scar and the steel is something far more dangerous:
Memory.
Regret.
And a love that never died.
When faced with an impossible choice—protect the empire or save one girl—Manly does the unthinkable. He doesn’t negotiate. He doesn’t compromise.
He burns it down.
What makes Manly unforgettable isn’t just his power—it’s his transformation. He doesn’t become a hero. He becomes human. And in The Hollows, that’s the most dangerous thing a man can be.
Because once he chooses her…
He doesn’t stop.
He defies the Board.
He rewrites the rules.
And he vows, without hesitation:
“You die, I die. You live, I live.”
Manly Whitaker isn’t just breaking the system.
He’s declaring war on it.
Behind the Keyboard
Can I confess something? This book has become my favorite kind of problem.
Every chapter reveals something new about these characters, and every time I think I know where the story is headed, someone makes a choice that changes everything.
I love it when books surprise me as I’m sitting down typing the words out on my laptop. That's when I know they're going to surprise readers, too.

You know I never leave you without something wicked to explore…
I’ve curated a collection of dark, high-heat romance from authors who understand one thing: We don’t fade to black.

He’s the boy who has everything.
Money. Power. Control.
And now… me.
Javier de la Garza isn’t the kind of boy you say no to.
Rich. Brilliant. Obsessed.
He hides obsession behind charm, but when he looks at me, I see the truth:
he doesn’t want me—he wants to own me.
I didn’t ask for his attention.
I didn’t know I was tied to what he lost.
But once he found me, he decided: I’ll never escape.
He says it’s protection.
I know it’s possession.
And every time I try to pull away, he drags me back with soft words, twisted promises, and hands that never let go.
I should’ve run. I didn’t.
And now?
He’s made sure I never can.

💌 A Note From Me
June has arrived, and life feels especially full right now.
This month, our daughter AK is graduating from elementary school. Thinking about watching her walk across that stage is one of those moments that makes you stop and wonder where the time went. Mr. SK and I are incredibly proud of the young lady she is becoming. Raising her has been one of the greatest joys of our lives, and it's been a privilege to watch her grow, learn, and find her own voice.
At the same time, life has thrown our family an unexpected challenge. Due to a family emergency, I'll be traveling back and forth to the East Coast to spend time with my mother and support my family during a difficult season.
If there's one thing I've learned over the years, it's that life rarely slows down when we need it to. The hard moments and the beautiful moments often arrive together.
Through it all, I'll keep writing. I'll keep working on The Hollows: Where the Redwoods Bury. I'll keep showing up for this newsletter. And I'll keep sharing the stories that help me make sense of the world, even when life feels a little chaotic.
Thank you for being here. Thank you for reading. And thank you for allowing me to share both the darkness of my fiction and the reality of the life behind the keyboard. I hope June brings you moments of joy, peace, and maybe a little escape between the pages of a good book.
Warmly Kelly 🖤
